    It Is Finished
    Finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows tonight.

    Am not as hard-core as I used to be. I had to stop and put the book down a few times because it was too much--either too emotional, or there was some wild new piece of info to process, or whatever. All told it took about 14 hours, which was longer than I expected. But I napped on my breaks. And had to walk the dog and stuff.

    Will post more later, and will comment and/or chat with anyone else who is done, but nothing more for now. Still processing.

    It's weird that it's over.

    Am already looking forward to some bad-ass fanfic/fanart, though.

    I'm baaaaaaaack...
    Well, after about a year of having no internet access outside of school (and the school's filter blocking all things LJ) I am finally back!! I have a laptop, WiFi capabilities, and high speed internet access. There's no stoppin' me now, kids...

    So, what'd I miss?? ;-)

    (With that said, I'll probably refrain from checking the fansites, etc., until after the book release. Woohoo!!)

    What is this witchcraft?!
    DAMMIT!!

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11696601/

    Go fill up your cars. NOW. Before prices sky-rocket again. *shakes fist angrily, using a number of ribald expletives directed at price-gouging oil execs*

    On a side note, people who use grammar like this ought not to be allowed to give official quotes to news agencies... My Inner Beta-Reader Cringes )

    And in other news:
    1) Thanks to all who suggested wines for the party! We all got a great little wine buzz, and a good time was had by all. (In the end I opted for a riesling in a pretty cobalt-blue bottle with a fish on the label. The girl who "won" had a grevache called, quite simply, "Bitch." It was awesome.)

    2) I start teacher in-service tomorrow. Woooo... At least it's a casual day. *clings to blue jeans*

    3) It rained a little bit here earlier, and my mom was telling my god-brother (?) about it on the phone, and he goes, "Water falling from the sky? Psh, I don't believe you. What is this witchcraft?!" HA!! I love my god-brother. If he was straight (and, well, not my god-brother), I'd probably have a huge crush on him. He's cool like that.

    I'm going to put gas in my car now.

    Happiness is...
    Spent much of yesterday evening and part of tonight "designing" HP costumes--dress robes, Quidditch robes, and one set of generic school robes.  And possibly a set of pyjamas.    o.O   Some of them actually came out looking quite lovely and semi-professional, which is odd considering I haven't had an art class since kindergarten.  Literally.  I've been neglecting my creative side lately, so perhaps it was just my Inner Artist yearning to burst forth.  Like a secret swan.  Or a zit on Eloise Midgen.  Something like that...

    Reason #394 That I Love My Church: Tonight, I GOT TO PLAY WITH A SCREW GUN!!  And duct tape!  And lighting instruments!!   At church!  *does happy dance of joy*  There's a lady there who's a certified stage hand with I.A.T.S.E., and she designs different sets and things to tie in with whatever the sermon series is at the time, to make it more atmospheric and such-like.   So I got to go to a "load-in" tonight, and play with fake foliage and extension cords and styrofoam rocks and other things that made my little thespian heart flutter in my chest.  OH!  And we were paid in hot dogs, sodas, ans s'mores.  Good times, good times.  'Twas a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

    And now, on an unrelated note... here's the part where I NEED YOUR HELP!

    I'm going to my "sista's" house-warming party tomorrow night.  (A "sista" is just like a sister, except for the part where we're separated by two different sets of parents and 15mos. age difference...  Yeah...)  It's a wine and cheese thing, and we're all supposed to bring a bottle of wine with an interesting name or a funny label or something like that.  I'm not a huge wine drinker, so I need some suggestions for a good wine to take to the party!   I tend to prefer reds to whites (nothing too heavy), and would prefer something on the not-wretchedly-expensive end of the scale.  Also, suggestions for a house-warming gift?  Any and all recommendations will be tremendously appreciated.  You people rock!

    My cat keeps walking into the room and meowing at me, but she won't let me pet her or pick her up, she doesn't want to sit in my lap, and her food bowl is full.  I don't understand what the problem is.  *sigh*

    Anyway, it's late.  I'm going to read a little fic and then head off to bed.  Have a great night, everybody!  *hugs*

    WOO!!
    So, it's been a hella long time since I've updated this thing. No, Adam, I don't "hate the LJ," I just went through one of those bizarre I-don't-wanna-mess-with-it phases. But that has happily come to an end! Back to the Land of LJ with me!!

    First, a Shout-Out to all my old-school flisties.  If you haven't abandoned me entirely from lack of updating, that is...  *tear*  I am happy to be back, and am looking forward to catching up!

    Am still in Vegas after the fabulous Lumos2006 fan conference. TOO MUCH FUN!! Got to meet and hang out with so many cool people, and it's always fun putting faces and voices with the names you see on a computer screen. I got to meet [info]belovedranger and [info]jennycarolyn and [info]mollierms and [info]tehgiantsquid and [info]chickadilly and LOADS of other fantabulous Checkmated folks!  (I'll post the contact list soon... just not right at this exact moment in time.)  And I got to see my fantabulous [info]kp_mushu again, too, but didn't get to spend as much time with her as I would've liked.  Alas!  But I suppose that just means we'll all have to arrange to meet up again some time.  :-)

    Roomed with my darling Gidge ([info]truesalcove) and my home-girl Sprout ([info]sproutgirl), and also with the fantastic [info]thalialunacy who is (to borrow her own phrase) MADE OF AWESOME.  We had far too much fun.  Crack Spice, Sleepy Spice, and Paprika are just about three of the coolest chicks EVAR.  End of story, good bye, THE END!  *cough*  Yeah...

    OH!!  And there was UNDERWEAR IN OUR ROOM!!  I noticed them the first night, but the other girls had already changed and unpacked and stuff, so I assumed they were Gidge's or Sprout's or Thalia's, and didn't say anything about it.  Then, on the last day when we went to pack up and check out, the conversation went something like this...

    ME:  Hey Gidge, Sprout, do these belong to y'all?
    GIDGE and SPROUT:  (giggle)  Um, no!
    ME:  Oh gosh, I seriously hope these belong to Thalia, or I'm going to be REALLY squicked-out...  (gingerly picks up item in question, carries them to Thalia)  Hey Thalia, are these yours?
    THALIA:  (cracks up laughing)  Uh, no...!
    ME:  (drops Manky Mystery Knickers and runs screaming through the room)  EEEEWWWWWWWW!!!!

    So we took them down to the front desk.  The woman looked horrified.  But not as horrified as I was.

    On a totally unrelated-to-knickers note:
    Sprout, Gidge, and I were inspired to create our very own PodCast!!  It was our first attempt, so it's a bit crazy, but as I said, it was a first attempt.  We shall be much more focused and much less long-winded (maybe) the next time!  (And yes, we intend to make this an ongoing thing.  LeakyMug, you'd best watch your back!  Backs?  Eh...)  Anyway, you can check out the link here:

    http://tri-witch.podomatic.com/

    Anyway, yeah!  That's about it from my barmy little corner of the world.  More to come soon!

    (BTW, if I met you at Lumos and you'd like to friend me for whatever strange, unknown reason: feel free!  I'm always up for new friends!)

    T-minus 24hrs...
    Well, my classroom's not done, but it's almost 7pm and I just ran out of staples.

    ...

    I think that's a sign from God that it's time to go home. I got everything done that needed to be done, I'm just tweaking and making things pretty at this point. (Not that it would take a lot. My room is FABULOUS. Anyway...)

    ~~~
    In other news, Jay and I broke up. But it's okay. It happened last weekend, actually, but due to a miscommunication (*coughOMGTOTALLYHISFAULTcough*) we ended up having another semi-row this afternoon. Which was just what I needed before starting school tomorrow. You know, because I already wasn't stressed/tired/emotional enough. *grumbles and glares*
    I'm okay with it, actually (well, y'know, except for the "miscommunication" this afternoon). I know he's not "the one" for me, so there's no point in dragging things out, especially with him leaving for SF training in three weeks. He's a good guy, and he'll make some girl very happy some day... it's just not going to be me. *shrug*
    So yeah. I'm fine.
    And on the market again.
    Which is good, because I met a REEEEEEALLY hot new teacher at orientation last week.
    Anyway, enough from the peanut gallery. I'll let y'all know how my day goes tomorrow. For now, I'm going home and eating. Then going to sleep. A LOT.
    Most Bizarre. Job offer. EVAR.
    I was offered a job yesterday.
    Tannahill Intermediate School (grades 5-6) in White Settlement ISD. This job, however, was not what I was expecting...
    MUSIC AND CHOIR. FOR 5TH AND 6TH GRADERS. ALL DAY, EVERY DAY.
    ...
    I was one of, I believe, at least 4 people to interview for this position. I thought it was Theatre/Music when I went in. Turns out there's no theatre, just music.
    Let's get something straight here: I read music, yes. I can plink out a melody on a piano, and can sing enough to do alright in a musical. But I am NOT certified to teach music. I am not even certified to teach 5th grade!!
    Apparently this principal wasn't too concerned about that. He liked me enough, I suppose, that he got permission from the district to emergency-certify me.
    Um, no offense, but WTF?!?! Is this some giant joke? I've never been in choir in my life, and haven't had a music class since college! And WHO ON EARTH WAS HE INTERVIEWING THAT I WAS THE MOST QUALIFIED CANDIDATE HE SAW ALL DAY?!
    This is bizarre. There's no other word for it.
    I told him I would accept the job, but (don't tell him this... yet...) I'm still looking for theatre positions. If I don't find a theatre job, I will survive doing this one. I know that the choir teacher from my old school (and my old voice teacher and music teachers) would help me out. I could eke by. (*hums "I Have Confidence"*) If I do manage to find a theatre job, I can resign and honestly say to this guy, "Look, I'm sorry, but I really don't feel I'm qualified to teach this class, and I feel it would be an injustice to the students to have me there. Let me recommend someone I know..."
    Weird. Too, too weird. Not sure how I feel about it, beyond that. *shrug* :-\
    (In other news, the countdown continues! T-minus two days till we know the identity of the Half-Blood Prince!) *squees with delight*
    HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AMERICA!!
    (The rest of the world may hate you, but I think you're pretty damn swell!)
    Oh, and BTW, my brother came home from Washington today!  It's great to see him.  I've missed my bubba.  He's a pretty cool guy... when he wants to be...!  We went and fed him real Tex-Mex for lunch (he was sooooo excited about the rice, of all things!), and we had Olive Garden for dinner.  I'm fat and happy right now.  (Also, Gram came home from the hospital, so it was a great day all around.)  :-)
    Oooh la...
    I cut the bejaysus out of my thumb yesterday.  At the gas station.  Of all the nasty, germ-ridden places to gash open one's thumb...  Eeeeewww!!  I cleaned it and slathered it up with Neosporin once I got to my mom's office, but that thing stung like a mo-fo.  It took off a chunk of skin, actually...  Anyway, the injured thumb is now being protected by a Winnie-the-Pooh Band-Aid.  With Piglet.  That makes it all better.
    Gram is doing alright.  Again, much thanks for the prayers and good vibes.  Saturday was pretty rough--she pulled a muscle close to the incision (OMGbiggapinggashinherside!) on Friday, so she was WAY SORE and in quite a lot of pain for most of the day, but after they got that under control, she got a lot better.  She's been improving every day since.
    I've GOT to start working out again.  I pulled a pair of khaki's out of my closet yesterday, and could barely get them to button up.  That's depressing.  Anyway, I found my gym card.  So I'm gonna go tonight and start trying to get back into the swing of things.  At least do some cardio or something...
    Trying to be optimistic about the job thing.  Haven't gotten any interviews yet, but it's still fairly early in the summer.  Principals are on vacation and such, and won't start panicking and calling people in until later...  I'm going to go introduce myself to principals in Keller and Grand Prairie this week.  Charm and a suit jacket.  We'll see how that goes.
    Not sure what's going on with me and Jay...  We're still together, but...  I dunno, it's strange.  It's one of those things where I get the feeling he's more into me than I am into him, and he's leaving for Special Forces training for God-knows-how-long in September.  I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm really into him...  I just can't tell whether my unease about the situation is caution (because I got burned so bad the last time), or because I really don't know if it's gonna work out.  I dunno, we'll see.  If it's meant to be, it'll work out.  If not, then I don't need to stress on it anyway.  Meh...
    Good Ju-Ju
    Quick update, then I'm off to the hospital again (good times, good times...):
    Thanks to all who sent prayers and/or good vibes to my Gram for her surgery. The surgery itself went very well--they were able to remove the entire mass without cracking ribs, which is excellent. I went to visit her yesterday, and (aside from some residual pain), she's doing very, very well. Her color is good, she's breathing fine, and has even been up walking a bit. They expect to move her to a non-ICU room today.
    I need to gush for a moment: I LOVE CHECKMATED!! The stories there are awesome; we've got some truly talented authors! The betas and admins are so friendly and helpful and encouraging, it just makes it a really great site to work for. I'm so, so glad that [info]truesalcove and [info]sproutgirl introduced me to the site in the first place. I loff eet! [/gush]
    My boy has been incommunicado for the last two days, and this is odd... Well, actually, I spoke to him briefly yesterday morning, but haven't heard from him since. It's not that I think anything's wrong or whatever... I'm just wondering where on earth he's disappeared to!
    Alright, enough rambling for me. Off to go slap on some makeup and head over to Dallas. (OOOH!! [info]texasmagic! I saw a great shirt over there yesterday... it had something about Ft. Worth on the front, and on the back it said "Life's too short to live in Dallas." It cracks me up! Erm, no offense to [info]spattergroit, [info]rickmansbitch, and [info]the_evil_git...) ;-)
    Yes, I'm still alive. *pokes flisties* Sorry I've been so inattentive lately. There are (*checks calendar*) 3 whole days, 2 half-days, 1 work day and a partridge in a pear tree till school is out. I will have successfully survived my first year of teaching. With middle-schoolers, no less...
    Wow.
    To quote my ex, I'm quite chuffed with myself. Yes, it was exhausting, and you poor flisties got to read about all my bad days, but there were also some really brilliant moments, too. I've had some great kids and met some amazing people. It's strange to think it's almost over.
    Anyhow.
    You scored as Cultural Creative. Cultural Creatives are probably the newest group to enter this realm. You are a modern thinker who tends to shy away from organized religion but still feels as if there is something greater than ourselves. You are very spiritual, even if you are not religious. Life has a meaning outside of the rational.
    Lunch Break Update
    Nothing really to say, except that in the last two days I have beta'd/published three stories by an author I previously hadn't read, but whom I am now fangirling wildly.  Last night, I beta'd two more (different authors) and sent the revised versions back to the authors for approval, so I should be able to publish those tomorrow!  Yippee!  I feel like a good little beta reader.  *grins*
    TAKS testing is over for us (finally), so next week we will be back on a regular schedule.  It's going to be hectic getting caught up--Mr. V (from the HS) is coming on Tues. to watch acting scenes, and some of these kids haven't had a script in their hands since probably before Spring Break!  But oh well.  What do you do?  They'll do the best they can.
    Maybe if I'm feeling uber-industrious later, I'll post links to the newly-published fics.  For now, however, it's off to food with me.  See you kids around!
    P.S.  Carvel's Cake Mix ice cream is my new <strike>love</strike> obsession in life.  If you can try some, DO SO.  You will not regret it!
    HEY!!
    Dude!  I just realized that this is my (approximate) one year anniversary in the Harry Potter fandom
    (Go on, congratulate me...!) *sassy wink*
    At this time last year, I was just discovering the Snitch Seeker forums, didn't know another soul in the fandom (not really), and hadn't yet discovered the wonderful world of HP fanfic.  Today, I'm a proud member of the PWGI (People Who Get It--if you don't know, feel free to ask!), a self-professed canon-thumper, and I hold the esteemed (at least in my eyes) title of Beta Reader/"Prefect" over at Checkmated.com!
    The HP fandom has introduced me to some wonderful works of fiction, and some even better friends.  Even though I don't frequent Snitch Seeker any more, I have them to thank for ushering me into this bizarre and wonderful world.  I can say without shame that the HP fandom has brightened my life in so many ways!  Tara, Christina, Crystal, Angi, Marcell, and Heather are six individuals I am proud to count as very dear friends, whom (chances are) I would never have met if it weren't for the HP fandom.  If you're reading this journal, it's because you're probably involved in the HP fandom in some way, too (with the exception of Kimberlee and Adam, who know my other "secret identity, bwahahahaha!).
    So, yay for all of us!  LOL  Go *huggle* or *toekiss* a fandom friend today.
    Y'ALL ROCK!!
    Interview-y Meme Thingy
    Yoinked with pride from [info]woodisgoodcdl, it's The Interview Meme! Her questions and my answers...
    1. The world is trying to end. Would you rather it be going by plague, nuclear bomb or crazy weather? And if so would you maybe enjoy it, just a little?.... I think I would rather it be via nuclear holocaust, 'cuz at least that way it would be over quickly. Plague would perhaps be more entertaining, however, what with re-enacting the "Bring Out Yer Dead" scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
    2. What's the weirdest pairing (OTP/RP slash/etc.) that secretly turns you on or fascinates you? Hahahahaha!! Charlie/Grubbly-Plank! HA!! (And maybe a little bit Draco/Ginny; even though it totally violates my OTP, it still fascinates me a little...)
    3. What's grosser? Making out with Woody Allen or eating worms? Why? Making out with Woody Allen is definitely grosser. He's old and pervy, and at least the worms would have some redeeming nutritional value.
    4. What's the perfect food combo? Chocolate and pretzels. Nature's perfect food. (That, or ranch dressing and french fries.)
    5. Which celebrity would make the best Governor of Texas and what color would their cowboy hat be? Dame Maggie Smith, for no other reason than the fact that I think it'd be damn funny to see her kick some retarded Austin hick ass. And she should totally have a baby blue cowboy hat.
    Now your turn:
    1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
    2. I will respond by asking you five questions. I get to pick the questions.
    3. You will update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
    4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post.
    5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.
    Rant du Jour
    (This is admittedly a bit mean-spirited, but only a little. I think most of y'all would agree with the sentiment...)
    Okay, so I found an old issue of Newsweek that had an article in it about HP:OotP right after it was released, with quotes from Rowling and stuff. And at one point they asked some young readers what they thought of the new book. And I just wanted to point and laugh at this kid! He's 15, and he was trying to sound all erudite and professional, but he missed the point entirely! (I've left the name off to protect his lame rear end...) And I quote:
    "The length of this book was unnecessary. Also unnecessary were the romantic subplots, as they do nothing to further one's enjoyment of the story, but on the contrary, hinder it. Despite all of this, Harry Potter Book 5 lived up to, but did not exceed, expectations."
    Oh my gosh!! $10 says this kid has never so much as asked a girl on a date. That, or he got burned and is really bitter now. Normal 15 year olds have crushes on people. JKR wanted Harry to be (on that level) a "normal" teenager. This kid totally missed the boat! As for the bit about the length being unnecessary, I'd like to know what he would've cut from it, because I get the feeling that if Jo left it in, it's there for a reason.
    Anyway, it made me shake my head and laugh. Feel free to join in the mocking.
    Loff, Flisties!
